Since David's name followed mine alphabetically on our class roster, I found myself sitting by him many times over the years, including at graduation. We weren't close friends, but from all those occasions sitting next to each other there was a certain bond.

David joined the Army shortly after graduation, and was killed in Vietnam.

A couple of months ago I was visiting my mother in Pampa and one of those "Moving Wall" scaled down versions of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. was on exhibit in town. With a little help from a volunteer guide I was able to find David's name on the wall.

It seems ironic that here I am making plans to attend our 40th reunion, have lived a happy and healthy life, and the guy that I sat next to at graduation was killed in a controversial war one year after we graduated.

I have been doing some research into those men from Pampa killed in Viet Nam. Roy David Paul was the only one from your 1969 class to be killed there. Although what I have is sketchy, he entered the Army after graduation almost directly. Roy David was a Water Craft Operator and was killed in the Vinh Long region. I have no data on his death other that he was killed by small arms fire on 4/04/1970. I dont know if he is buried in Pampa or not. He was the next to last of 6 men killed in Viet Nam from Pampa.
